What to Expect

During the Consultation

In addition to taking a look at your teeth, we will also take photos and x-rays during the consultation. Then Dr. Gardner will tell you what dental conditions he sees and how they can be treated. He will review what types of appliances might be used, such as metal braces, clear braces, or Invisalign. He will also answer any questions you have about treatment and costs.

When Getting Your Braces Put On

We will use a few different tools when putting your braces on.  If you are getting braces with metal brackets, we will use a lip separator to hold open your mouth while glueing each bracket to your teeth. This part does not hurt, however, your gums will likely be tender later in the day.

A note for parents, this could potentially be a long appointment. Enjoy the free wi-fi, reading materials and refreshments in our waiting area – or bring something to keep you occupied.

During Treatment

You will come back to the office approximately every 8 to 10 weeks for an adjustment. The adjustment is when we make changes to the wires to cause your teeth to shift into the correct spot. You will likely experience discomfort later in the day and for a few days after this appointment – especially while eating. To help out, take pain relievers as if you have a headache. Also, choose foods that do not require a lot of chewing like soup, soft bread, oatmeal, yogurt and applesauce.

At each visit we will put rubber bands on the brackets to hold the wire in place. You get to pick the color each time.

For Invisalign braces patients, you will get new aligners at each adjustment appointment.

Caring For Your Braces and Teeth

You will need to brush your teeth more often when you have braces because food can get stuck in the wires. You may even opt to get a Water Pik, which squirts water to clean out the food bits.

And don’t be afraid to laugh and smile! Most people have had braces in their lifetime.
